Weekend Update: May 22-24

Wall-to-wall sunshine this weekend at the Raleigh Flea Market

This weekend is the unofficial start of summer and things are moving at a little slower pace at the fairgrounds. Holiday weekends usually means fewer events, making it a great weekend for a leisurely stroll through the flea market. The Raleigh Flea Market is open every Saturday and Sunday. The Commercial and Education buildings and outside grounds are host to hundreds of dealers, craftsmen and booths. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Have stuff to sell? You can rent a booth at the market for $30 on Saturday, $25 on Sunday or $50 for the whole weekend.

Other events this weekend:

Southern States Regional Morgan Horse Show runs through Sunday at the Hunt Horse Complex. This is a world-class event with more than 200 Morgans from across the United States traveling to compete in divisions ranging from Hunt and Classic Pleasure to English and Park classes, both under saddle and in harness. There are also dressage trail and carriage classes as well as vendors displaying a variety of unique equine gifts. Spectator admission is free. The main arena is open daily 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Outside open ring hours are Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for dressage; and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon for carriage driving.

The Raleigh Durham Caged Bird Society’s 27th Annual Pet Bird Fair is Saturday in the Scott Building. This show features exotic birds from around the world, a large selection of vendors selling bird-related items, and a huge raffle to benefit avian research and conservation. Hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About Funhouse

On the blog I go by Fun House (AKA Heather Overton). At the Fair you'll find me checking out the blue ribbon winners or hanging out in Heritage Circle. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite part of the Fair, but I can tell you one thing I hate - leaving it on the last day. I can't wait for opening day!
