Weekend Update: Jan. 11-13

The fairgrounds are going to the dogs. Or at least the Horse Complex and the Holshouser Building are, with two dog-centered sports taking place at the fairgrounds this weekend.

There is more than $1,500 in prize money up for grabs at the Carolina Piedmont Dog Agility trials in the Hunt Horse Arena, with three full days of competition. Watch as dogs of every skill level and size run obstacles such as the A-frame, weave poles, jumps and plank.  The event runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Spectator admission is free.

On Saturday and Sunday, head over to the Holshouser Building to see dogs race in the DogGoneFast Flyball Club Flyball Tournament. Dogs and people alike go wild over this relay race with 4 dogs per team. Racing is Saturday from  8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spectators and leashed dogs are welcome to come and watch. Admission is free.

It’s the 23rd annual Bass and Saltwater Fishing Expo in the Graham Building and Expo Center, Friday through Sunday. Stars of the hit show, Hillbilly Hand Fishing, will be on hand Saturday and Sunday to meet and greet with guests. Fresh water, saltwater, kayaking, offshore and inshore gear, tackle, seminars, boats and more will be displayed. Show hours are Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults,$7 for seniors ages 60 and up, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for ages 5 and under. Admission is good all three days.

In the Scott Building, the 83rd North State Toy & Hobby Show will take place Saturday and Sunday, featuring antique and modern collectible toys. Diecast and plastic models, Star Wars, Hot Wheels, Yu-gi-oh, Lord of Rings, sci-fi toys, Western toys, and other collectibles will be available from more than 70 exhibitors buying, selling and trading. The event is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 daily, or $7 for a weekend pass. Children under 16 years are admitted free.

On Saturday, the Raleigh FunFest Winter Tournament will take place in Barn E Ring at the horse complex. This American Saddlebred Association of the Carolinas-affliliated tournament is for students currently taking riding lessons. Riders will be judged on basic riding skills. Event is free for spectators. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And don’t forget that the Raleigh Flea Market takes place each Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
