Weekend Update: Feb. 14-16

Classic cars will be on display this weekend in Dorton Arena

Bounce back from a few days at home by coming out to what will be a busy weekend at the Fairgrounds.  Events include car shows, bull riding, drag bingo and toy and train show.  As always, the Raleigh Flea Market takes place each weekend in the Commercial and Education buildings and outside grounds from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

 Events this weekend

  • North Carolina International Auto Expo will be in the Graham Building, Exposition Center and Dorton Arena on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Wake County New Vehicle Dealer Association will have new production models and concept cars with car, truck and sport utility vehicle manufacturers on display. Dorton Arena will feature a classic car display on Saturday and Sunday, along with a display of law enforcement and race cars. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for ages 60 and over, $4 for ages 6 to 12 and free for ages 5 and under.
  • Carousel Farms American Bullriders Finals will be Friday and Saturday at the Hunt Horse Complex, featuring bull riding and barrel racing. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the events starts at 7:30 p.m. each night. Admission is $15 for VIP reserved seating and $10 for general admission. Children ages five and under are admitted free.   •  The VolksFest will be held Saturday in the Scott Building. This is an all Volkswagen car show & swap meet. VW enthusiasts are encouraged to come buy and sell vintage VW parts, sell or show off their vehicle. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is $10. Children 12 and under are admitted free.
  • Drag Bingo, an annual fundraiser for the Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina, will be held Saturday in the Holshouser Building. Doors open at 6 p.m. and show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at the door.
  • The 29th Annual Carolina Aquarium Workshop & Auction will be held Saturday and Sunday in the Martin Building. The Raleigh Aquarium Society will offer workshops throughout the day on Saturday and an auction on Sunday with a wide variety of fish, plants and hardware items. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.  Auction registration will be on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. The auction begins at 11 a.m.
  • The Toy Train Sale and Swap Meet will be held on Sunday in the Scott Building. Show offers more than 100 vendors featuring Lionel, K-Line, MTH, Weaver, Atlas, American Flyer, Bachmann, Varney “N,” “HO,” “O,” “S” and “G” gauge trains, accessories, track, switches, hard-to-find parts and other toy-train-related items. Kid’s Club activities include hands-on layouts and train races. Workshops and minor on-site repairs will also be offered. An auction will be held at 1 p.m. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is $6 for adults and free for children under 13 accompanied by paying adult.

It would be hard for me to pick a favorite part of the Fair, but I can tell you one thing I hate - leaving it on the last day. I can't wait for opening day!
