Weekend Update: April 20-22

Want action, adventure and one-of-a-kind shopping? Check out the events this weekend at the Fairgrounds.

The Southern Women’s Show is back with spa treatments, makeovers, jewelry, gifts, food, wine, cooking classes, health screenings and more. For more than three decades, the show has been recognized as a premier event for women in the Triangle community. Hours are Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $12. Advance tickets are $10 online or $8 at Walgreens locations; admission for ages 6 to 12 is $6. Special 3-day passes are available for $15.

The Raleigh Flea Market is Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Commercial and Education buildings and surrounding grounds.  Come and browse for treasures at the flea market, recognized as one of the largest in the southeast.  Visitors will find hundreds of booths filled with antiques, clothes and handcrafted goods this weekend.

Come cheer on the Triangle Torch as they seek to continue their winning season Saturday night in Dorton Arena. Saturday is First Responders Appreciation Night and the Torch will take on the Greenville Dragons in their second arena football game of the season. Doors open at 6:30 and the game starts at 7:30. VIP seats are $25 each. General Admission is $14 for adults and $10 for children.  Players will sign autographs after the game.

3rd Annual Shuck-n-Chuck Oyster Roast will be held in the Tobacco Pavilion on Saturday night. This event is a fundraiser to support Rebuilding Together of the Triangle. Oysters, chicken, sides, beer & wine included with admission. Event features live local music, a raffle and opportunities to learn more about RTT’s work to ensure low-income families across the Triangle have a safe, healthy place to live. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m. Admission is $60 per person.

NCHJA “C” Outdoors Hunter Jumper Horse Show runs Friday through Sunday at the Hunt Horse Complex. Daily show begins at 8 a.m. Admission is free.

ReefSMART is Saturday in the Holshouser Building. This is an expo put on by the nonprofit Sustainable Reef, and consists of vendors offering goods and services, raffles drawn throughout the day, and fragging demonstrations in the afternoon. Come learn how to make your own rock, or participate in a round-table discussion on the hot topics in the hobby.  Doors open 11 a.m. with $20 admission between 11 a.m. and noon. General admission is free from noon to 6 pm.

The 7th annual N.C. Persian Festival is Saturday in the Scott Building. This event is a celebration of Persian culture and cuisine and features dance performances, live music, art, food, cultural exhibits and displays, handicrafts, a silent auction, children’s activity center and vendor exhibits. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $2, and ages 6 and under are admitted free.

North Central Open Benefit Show-Spring Holiday Classic is Saturday and Sunday at the Hunt Horse Complex. Proceeds benefit the Equestrian Western Club at N.C. State University and the North Central District 4-H Program.  Check out the show website for times.

The 4th annual Unleashed Mutt Spring Fling is Sunday at the Tobacco Pavilion and Heritage Circle. This event is focused on helping local area animal rescue groups. Many rescues will be there along with local vendors, and games. One of the most popular activities is the Doggie Easter Egg Hunt with thousands of eggs filled with special prizes! Admission is free for dogs and people. Donations for local rescue groups appreciated.  Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On the blog I go by Fun House (AKA Heather Overton). At the Fair you'll find me checking out the blue ribbon winners or hanging out in Heritage Circle. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite part of the Fair, but I can tell you one thing I hate - leaving it on the last day. I can't wait for opening day!
