Wanted: Friends

It’s official. The State Fair is totally hip and cool.

Not that we weren’t before, but this is the first year that the Fair has gone virtual with this blog, a YouTube channel, and Facebook and MySpace pages. We decided to launch all of these sites to keep up with the changing pace of the 24 hour news world we now live in…and to connect with all of you!

Are any of you State Fair-lovers out there also jumping on the social media bandwagon? It’s a good time to do it, as today Facebook unveiled its newest version that is supposed to make the Web site cleaner and easier to navigate. The News & Observer also has a story in it today that goes into more detail.

Becoming our Friend is a great way to keep up with the latest Fair news, but it’s also a way to have fun with some of the unusual features both sites have. For example, both have running countdowns that let you know down to the second how long you have to wait until you’re holding a giant turkey leg in your hands (87 days, 1 hour, 29 minutes and 13 seconds, to be exact). On our Facebook page, you can share “bumper stickers” that proclaim your love for the Fair, as well as browse through an album of classic Fair pictures. If you’re more of a MySpace fanatic, you can hob-knob with Fair performers Josh Turner, Lady Antebellum, Mario and more–we hate to brag (cough, cough) but all of these talented performers are in our Top Friends.

Also, a big shout out to WRAL for mentioning our blog. We’ve added its State Fair blog to our Blog Roll so be sure to check it out. Technology reporter Tara Calishain had some cool ideas for future blog posts (Midway ride test-drives, a Twitter channel).

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.
