TXT-O-LYMPIX

Luckily, our texters will be on their own two feet. Photo from Matthias Bethke.

A few months ago we held our first Deep Fried blog contest for texting pros to announce the Fair’s first texting contest. We promised details, and here they are. The TXT-O-LYMPIX (love the name) kicks off tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in the Folk Festival tent, which is near Gate 10 behind our offices, the Kerr Scott Building.

You can register Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the entry office inside Gate 11 in the administration office. You’ll be handsomely rewarded for your thumb-nastics: First place gets $300, second wins $150 and third place will take home $75. And word on the street is even the audience will be able to participate for State Fair t-shirts, caps, tickets, pins and more.

Participants ages 13 and up will be judged on accuracy and speed as messages are displayed on a screen. They will be expected to type phrases exactly as they appear on the screen. The first message to reach the judge first is the winner of that round. That winner will advance to the next round until there is only 1 person left. All participants will be required to use an Alltell SoHo phone provided by the contest.

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.
