Starting a new job is always nerve-racking, but I have to say that I felt welcome the moment I walked through the door here at the N.C. State Fair. Besides all the lovely people I work with here, I think the transition was made easier by the fact I’m exactly where I wanted to be this summer. I love the Fair, and that, combined with the passion that I have for public service, is why I chose to apply for this internship and then to work here. I hope eventually to make a career out of public service, and I hope this internship will be a stepping stone to that ultimate goal.
I honestly can’t believe it’s already been a week since I started — the time has flown by, and I know that the next nine weeks will probably go the same way. In this first week I’ve already written several blog posts to appear both here (see Weekend Update: May 25-28) and on the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ In The Field blog, kick-started a grassroots advertising campaign aimed at high school students and begun to research and write some future press releases.
Speaking of the blog, if you haven’t yet noticed, all of us here at the N.C. State Fair have chosen a fair themed alternative name. So why Tilt-A-Whirl? There’s a simple answer. Rides are my favorite part of the Fair, and the Tilt-A-Whirl is the best ride there is, despite the fact that I couldn’t find a good picture to post here.
One-and-a-half weeks out, I’ve already learned so much about the Fair, NCDA&CS and the great things that the people of North Carolina are doing to ensure that the future is a bright one for our state. I’m excited to learn more this summer, and at this early stage I know that I’ll be sad to leave when my time is up. Keep checking back for updates from me and the rest of the Deep Fried Crew.
