The deep-fried re-re-remix

footlongsongchallenge_logo1If you haven’t heard, the N.C. State Fair is hosting the first $5 Footlong Song Challenge with Subway this year. (I know you’re mentally singing the “5…5 dollar…5 dollar footloooong” jingle in your head right now. Yeah, me too.)

You can check out the rules for the contest on the challenge’s Web site, but basically you choose a style of music (rock, country, hip-hop, bluegrass or island, which are provided on the Web site) and submit original lyrics focusing on SUBWAY Restaurants’ “$5 Footlongs” and the N.C. State Fair’s theme “Whole Lotta Happy.”

We’ve had some really creative submissions. Todd Prichard, who has helped put the contest together, put together some especially hilarious/awesome lyrics as an example. Click the audio file below to hear his hip-hop ode to subs and the Fair.

Don’t worry, he’s not eligible to win, but you are. Contestants with the best lyrics will be invited to perform their songs live at the Fair for a pretty sweet prize: $500 Subway gift card (that’s 100 $5 footlong subs) and two VIP tickets to see American Idol contestant Anoop Desai perform his first solo concert in Dorton Arena Thursday, Oct. 22.

Get started here by choosing your band. We hope to see you on stage!

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.
