Weekend Update: June 17-19

The State Fairgrounds will be filled with classic cars, toys and miscellaneous treasures this weekend. Upcoming events include: The Raleigh Classic Car Auction is Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Graham Building and the Exposition Center. Adult admission is $10 per day or $15 for a two-day pass; admission for children 12 and under is $5 per day or $7 for a two-day pass. Progress Photo – Two days and counting

At the N.C. State Fair, we try not to judge. That is, unless ribbons are involved. And let me tell you, there was a lot of judging going on today at the fair. The Education, Hobbies and Handicrafts and Scott buildings were all abuzz with experts tasting, smelling and examining their way through entries. Everywhere you looked, you could find white, red, blue and purple ribbons being tied onto winning entries. Outside, the rides are under construction and food vendors are getting set up. Photographs of photographs

A picture, as they say, is worth 1,000 words. As a writer, I’m used to coming up with ways of stringing together words to create the most clarity and impact, but I’m always fascinated with the ways that shading, editing, cropping, zooming and lighting can tell a story without any words whatsoever. It’s probably no surprise, then, that one of my favorite things to do is browse the Arts and Photography exhibit.
