Three tents you won’t want to miss

On the east side of the fairgrounds, there are three large tents where you can sample hush puppies and specialty sauces, learn about our state’s growing green industry and even plant a sunflower to take home with you. The Got to Be NC Agriculture tent, Green NC tent and Seed Survivor exhibit are must-see destinations for families at the Fair. In the Got to Be NC tent, located outside the Kerr Scott Building, fairgoers can sample and purchase food from North Carolina vendors selling everything from ice cream to barbecue sauce. The Green NC tent is located just inside Gate…

Take a tour of Green NC, earn a State Fair T-shirt

Have you been to the Green NC exhibit yet? That’s the large, unassuming white tent located near Gate 11. It’s the only place on the fairgrounds where you can participate in a chemistry experiment, “fish” in a State Park pond and see solar panels all in one location. Not to mention earn a cool T-shirt. That’s right, we are giving away 2009 State Fair T-shirts over here, but there’s a small catch — you’ll need to learn a little. The Green NC exhibit is one of many educational experiences on the fairgrounds. Visitors can interact with environmental organizations, learn about “green” topics through hands on activities and participate in…

Don’t throw ’em away, recycle!

If you’re out at the Fair, enjoying a refreshing drink in a plastic bottle or aluminum can, be sure to dispose of those drink containers in a recycling bin. You can find these reycling bins scattered throughout the fairgrounds, and because of their bright green and yellow design, they are pretty easy to spot. Did you know 100 plastic bottles are thrown away every second in North Carolina? On Oct. 1, a new law went into effect banning plastic bottles from landfills, and the folks at  the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance want you to know…

Confessions from the Green NC exhibit

I can admit this now, but last year at this time I had no idea what the Green NC exhibit was going to be like. In fact, even though I am the exhibit coordinator, I really didn’t know how things would turn out until the morning before the N.C. State Fair opened! Oh sure, there were planning meetings with exhibitors, a layout design and lots of signage in the works, but the exhibit content kept changing. Several organizations had to drop out at the last minute, which meant the layout had to be revised (then revised again), causing sign changes…

Volunteer to recycle, get free Fair T-shirt and admission ticket

The N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance is assisting Green Thing again this year with the Fair’s recycling booths. This is the second year we’ve had recycling bins at the Fair, and we’re excited this program is growing. We had some great volunteers last year who made the program a success, and we need your help again. Best of all, if you volunteer, you’ll recieve a Fair T-shirt and an admission ticket. Here are some more details on the program from the RE3.org blog: The recycling and composting education booth will be part of the GreenNC tent. The…

Green NC exhibit returns

Last year, the N.C. State Fair offered a new educational exhibit call Green NC. The exhibit was a fun and interactive environment with displays on energy conservation, alternative fuels and renewable energy sources like solar power and biofuels, locally grown foods, recycling, water conservation and eco-friendly living. Green NC is returning this year, and with only 89 days until the Fair opens, we’re busy finalizing exhibitors, designing the layout and adding new hands-on components.

Please Recycle!

Recycling stations located at Green NC, Dorton Arena, the Midway and Heritage Circle. We’re trying something green this year. Fairgoers can take advantage of four recycling stations around the fairgrounds to dispose of plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Recycling stations are located at the Green NC exhibit near Gate 11, Dorton Arena, the Midway and Heritage Circle. Look for the recycling symbol on the daily schedule map, and keep an eye out for the brightly colored green and yellow bins. We decided to offer only four recycling stations as a test project this year, and if all goes well, we…

Keep it clean

What’s more fun that spray painting a storm drain? Spray painting about 200 storm drains! Thanks to a few tireless community volunteers, educational outreach folks from the Division of Water Quality, a little ‘ole me, Green Thing (I’m the one taking the picture), the State Fair is now “tagged” with a very important message – don’t toss litter down a storm drain because it pollutes our rivers and streams! In fact, stormwater runoff is the number one cause of water pollution in North Carolina and the nation, according to the N.C. Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources. We met this…
