New food: Joe’s Big Dogs

There are hot dogs, and then there’s Joe’s Big Dogs. The silver diner car located between the Jim Graham Building and Dorton Arena has been a surprising sight for many people walking into the Fair from Gate 2. That’s because Joe Bushfan, owner of Joe’s Big Dogs, is selling some really big hot dogs.  You can get Joe’s all-beef hot dog in three sizes: quarter pound, half pound and yes, even a 1-pound hot dog. Blue Ribbon, Firecracker and I decided it was best to tackle the massive 1-pound hot dog together. We spent some time talking to Joe about…

Deep Fried Review: Fried Frito Pie

My mouth has been watering in anticipation of tasting the Fried Frito Pie since I first heard it was going to be at the N.C. State Fair. I simply couldn’t resist this recipe description: Texas chili mixed with mild cheddar cheese, wrapped in Frito corn chips, then battered and fried. The dish comes with a side of salsa and sour cream. Steph’s Strawberries, located near the Village of Yesteryear in front of the Rabbit Barn, serves up a large portion of the deep-fried treat. Check out this deep fried review: Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. Check back during the Fair…

Krispy Kreme Burger: I can’t believe I ate the whole thing

You should know that we walk a lot during the Fair. On average, around five miles a day. I know that doesn’t make up for what I did today because today I ate a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger. That’s right, a hamburger patty, cheese and bacon between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. You can find the Krispy Kreme burger at several locations around the Fair (use the new food finder to see them all). I tried the Murphy House’s version, which is ironically topped with lettuce and tomato. Watch the video below to see how it went: Note: If video doesn’t…
