Weekend Update: April 6-8

Don’t be alarmed if you see a bunch of robots moving around Dorton Arena this weekend. The robots aren’t dangerous; they are part of the 2012 NC FIRST Robotics Regional. NC FIRST encourages students to pursue degrees in science and technology through hands-on experiences, such as building robots. During the tournament, high school teams from across the country will control their robots through a series of challenges. The top teams from Friday and Saturday will advance to the finals Saturday afternoon. Admission is free. Opening ceremonies take place at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. Another type…

Weekend Update: March 30-April 1

It’s hard to believe we’ve almost wrapped up the first three months of 2012. That means the State Fair will be here before you know it. Sadly, it’s not this weekend. But, there are plenty of activities going on at the fairgrounds we think you will enjoy. The Wake County Library Book Sale started Thursday in the Graham Building with more than 450,000 items for sale. Bibliophiles and bookworms love this annual event, which benefits the Wake County Library.  Book prices range from $2-4 each. Three tents you won’t want to miss

On the east side of the fairgrounds, there are three large tents where you can sample hush puppies and specialty sauces, learn about our state’s growing green industry and even plant a sunflower to take home with you. The Got to Be NC Agriculture tent, Green NC tent and Seed Survivor exhibit are must-see destinations for families at the Fair. In the Got to Be NC tent, located outside the Kerr Scott Building, fairgoers can sample and purchase food from North Carolina vendors selling everything from ice cream to barbecue sauce.
