If you have children and consider yourself a bit of a “frugalista,” make sure you come to the fairgrounds this weekend for the Kids Exchange Consignment Sale. The sale offers parents a chance to buy and sell gently used clothing, toys and other goods for their children, and is open to the public Friday to Sunday in the Graham Building and Expo Center. Did you get a new boat for Christmas? No? Well, then buy yourself a New Year’s gift starting this Friday at 10 a.m. at the Bass & Saltwater Fishing Expo in the Graham and Expo buildings! This show for the serious fisherman features more than 175 booths offering everything from the latest lures, custom rods, apparel, knives, product sample booths, seminars, electronics and more. If you’re like me, you’re a little hesitant around bees. I can’t help but picture the scene from 1991’s “My Girl” where Macaulay Culkin goes back to the woods to find a lost mood ring and gets stung by a swarm of bees. Bees are scary, or at least that’s what I thought before I visited the bee exhibit in the Expo Center. The exhibit is all about the importance of bees and beekeeping to N.C. agriculture. A sweet potato larger than a person’s head, a watermelon weighing 282 pounds and the infamous Bhut Jolokia or Ghost Pepper are just some of the items that will be on display in the Expo Center during the 2011 N.C. State Fair. Today, growers from across the state braved the showers to bring in their entries in various horticulture competitions. Henderson County apple growers meticulously selected apples from dozens of cases to find the blue-ribbon worthy picks for their trays. Things remained busy on the fairgrounds Sunday as more vendors moved in and people dropped off competitive entries to be judged later this week. The Expo Center was all set up and ready for giant pumpkins, apples, bee products and animals to be delivered. Registration was strong across the board, so judging this week will be busy. The State Fair Ark display is located in the Expo Center. Several breeds of animals, such as cows, donkeys, sheep, pigs and horses are displayed in the Ark so that fairgoers always have a chance to see farm animals.

The Raleigh Kids Exchange Consignment Sale begins today and continues through Sunday in the Graham Building and Exposition Center. The event bills itself as “the ultimate recycle” and “the nation’s largest consignment event.” In the past few years the event has grown steadily, so expect to see a wide variety of items. Kids Exchange is designed to allow parents to come together to buy, sell and donate clothes, toys and other children’s items. Auctions America presents the Raleigh Classic Car Auctions in the Graham Building and Exposition Center. A special preview of the cars to be auctioned was held on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m., and the actual auctions will be held today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A complete listing of the items up for auction is available online here. Steve Brogan isn’t your typical one-man show. Sure, he’s the only person in the show, but that doesn’t mean he’s all alone. That’s because Steve is a nationally recognized ventriloquist and voices an entire cast of characters, from an old curmudgeon to a talking duck. He comes from a family of ventriloquists and has turned a childhood hobby into a career, with television appearances on Good Morning America and The Fox Network. Fairgoers are sure to be entertained with his comedic performances outside the Expo Center during the Fair. Steve will make his N.C. Tobacco is a large part of the agricultural heritage of North Carolina and you can see it across the fairgrounds. Throughout the Fair, a dedicated staff stokes the fire at the Heritage Circle tobacco barn, and you may remember Merrie Go Round trying her hand at tobacco tying earlier this week. Yesterday, retired tobacco buyers, warehousemen and auctioneers re-enacted a live tobacco auction in the Expo Center.
