You don’t have to go over a mountain to see some of the best exhibits at the fair. You just have to go “up the hill.” If you’ve never been up the hill from the lake, then you’ve missed a special portion of the N.C. State Fair. The area located near Heritage Circle is full of exhibits from the N.C. Forest Service and Division of Soil and Water Conservation. A few days ago, Bearded Lady, Firecracker and Flying Bob took on the deep-fried brownie for the first installment in our series of fan-selected press office challenges. If you’re like me, you’re a little hesitant around bees. I can’t help but picture the scene from 1991’s “My Girl” where Macaulay Culkin goes back to the woods to find a lost mood ring and gets stung by a swarm of bees. Bees are scary, or at least that’s what I thought before I visited the bee exhibit in the Expo Center. The exhibit is all about the importance of bees and beekeeping to N.C. agriculture. Over the summer, we gave you a preview of the new Cultivate a Career exhibit at this year’s fair. Sunday, Baby Goat and I took a tour to discover all the great activities the exhibit offers visitors. Promoting the agriculture industry and consumer education have long been at the core of the State Fair’s mission. A new exhibit at this year’s fair, Cultivate A Career, will add to this great tradition. Located near gate 12, the exhibit is designed to highlight the importance of agricultural careers to our economy in a fun and interactive environment. Visitors will have the chance to “test drive” a high-tech tractor, try their hand at building a small-scale model barn, analyze plant and animal specimens with a microscope and promote their experiences within the exhibit to others. Three tents you won’t want to miss

On the east side of the fairgrounds, there are three large tents where you can sample hush puppies and specialty sauces, learn about our state’s growing green industry and even plant a sunflower to take home with you. The Got to Be NC Agriculture tent, Green NC tent and Seed Survivor exhibit are must-see destinations for families at the Fair.
