Twitter roundup: Seven sinful State Fair foods

Food has long had a central role in shaping the way people experience the N.C. State Fair. Premiums have been awarded for the production of top notch agricultural products since the first fair in 1853, and the first booths selling food appeared on the midway around 1900. At that time, many booths sold food to raise money for churches and civic organizations, and that is still true today. What’s more, in  a survey conducted a few years back, 70 percent of fairgoers chose food as one of the reasons they attended the N.C. State Fair. We wanted to highlight the…

Deep-fried heaven on a stick

Heaven is a deep-fried honey bun, or at least that’s my opinion. The press office, along with members of the media and our new Deep Fried Ambassador, sampled new Fair foods during Monday’s pre-Fair media lunch. There were deep-fried Chips Ahoy cookies, deep-fried Honey Buns and Kool-Aid Pickles. First, Sweet Corn and Firecracker sampled the deep-fried Chips Ahoy cookies, which are similar to deep-fried Oreos in that they are a fried ball of chocolate and cookie. Yum! Flying Bob and I joined in to tackle the deep-fried honey bun, which is about as close to deep-fried heaven as you get….

Deep Fried Ambassador update: Reptile on a stick

(This is part 4 of the “Whole Lotta Loony” series chronicling the adventures of your Deep-Fried Ambassador and Deputy Deep-Fried at the North Carolina State Fair.) Is it possible that all state fair food could be described as weird?  I mean, most of it is stuff we don’t normally eat in our daily lives, except for that one magical week of the year when diets and scales go out the window. But I think some fair food is stranger than others. Like side meat. What exactly is that? Guess I’m not southern enough. Also ostrich. I hope I don’t offend…
