Day 8: Chocolate Covered Bacon and Deep-Fried Ho-Hos

Over the past four years, we’ve had the chance to sample some of the latest, greatest and strangest fair food to come to the N.C. State Fair. In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought we would look back at 15 of our favorite food-related posts from the past four years. Each day between now and Christmas, we’ll post a different food review from our archives. 8. Deep-fried Ho-Hos and chocolate-covered bacon (2009) This morning we had our pre-Fair media lunch, and man, was it tasty. The Murphy House, which brought us deep-fried pecan pie and deep-fried mac’n’cheese last year,…

Top Deep Fried Blog posts of 2009

2009 was a great year here in the deep-fried N.C. State Fair offices. We broke individual and overall attendance records, had a Twitter-ific tweetup, collected more cans on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day than ever before, crowned our first Deep Fried Ambassador and, of course, taste-tested some pretty interesting deep-fried food. As we cross into another year, we thought we’d take a look back at the top five Deep Fried Blog posts of 2009. 5. Sampling Woody’s new buffalo chicken rangoons

We here in the Press Office take our duties very seriously. Between helping the media, organizing the opening ceremony and various press conferences, writing blog posts and news releases and more, we make sure to try out the newest food creations on the fairgrounds and share them with you. We’ve already tasted deep-fried Ho Hos and chocolate-covered bacon, and yesterday we stopped by Woody’s City Market food stand to try out the new buffalo chicken rangoons. These bite-sized, deep-fried dumplings (similar to the crab rangoons available in many Chinese restaurants) are filled with Woody’s famous buffalo chicken and medium sauce….

As we get closer and closer to the Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, we wanted to give you a little more information on what you can expect at the event beyond lots of tweeting, lots of friends and lots of N.C. (Who is joining me in getting a Fail Whale painted on their face?) If you haven’t joined in on the fun yet, be sure to register for the event here, and come out to…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: A whole lotta happy. And bacon.

It was such a pleasure to meet our Deep Fried Ambassador in person today. She was a pro at tweeting out the information we announced this afternoon at the pre-Fair media lunch. Luckily for us, she’ll be returning to the Fair a few times between now and Sunday, Oct. 25 on “official duty.” We’re excited she’ll be a part of our blogging staff. Below is her first post. Be sure to visit her blog Pretty*Swell to keep up with her Fair adventures, and we’ll also repost all of her updates here. The theme for this year’s North Carolina State Fair…

Deep-fried Ho-Hos and chocolate-covered bacon

This morning we had our pre-Fair media lunch, and man, was it tasty. The Murphy House, which brought us deep-fried pecan pie and deep-fried mac’n’cheese last year, never fails to wow us with its deep-fried creativity. This year was no different. We were able to sample chocolate-covered bacon (fittingly called “pig lickers”) and — brace yourself — deep-fried Ho-Hos. In the name of work research, the Bearded Lady, Firecracker and I took them for a test run. Check out the video below for our reactions. Note: If video doesn’t appear, try refreshing your browser. You’ll be able to find the…
