Anniversary quilt at the N.C. Museum of History

As the 2013 N.C. State Fair wrapped up, a special commemorative quilt created to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the first fair moved to a temporary new home at the N.C. Museum of History. FFA and 4-H chapters from 36 counties submitted quilt squares for the project, and quilting volunteers and attendees at the N.C. State Fair this year helped sew the squares together in the Village of Yesteryear. The State 4-H Horse Show begins today at 3 p.m. and runs through Sunday night at the Hunt Horse Complex. The show is designed to highlight the achievement of North Carolina’s youth in the areas of horseback riding and horse management. The N.C. State Fair and the State 4-H have enjoyed a long tradition of cooperation. The event will feature more than 100 equine competitions and a vendor fair. The N.C. State Fairgrounds is blooming with activities this weekend. Garden enthusiasts will want to check out two events happening in the Flower and Garden Show area this weekend. The Gardeners of Wake County will host its annual Azalea Sale to raise money for horticultural scholarships and other projects at N.C. State University. The 4-H also will be on hand selling a variety of annuals and perennials. County Fair Travels: Two trips to Burke County

Two weeks ago, I traveled to Morganton to visit the Burke County Fair and this week I went back to Burke for the Drexel Community Fair in town of Drexel. Burke County is one of three North Carolina counties that hosts multiple agricultural fairs. The Burke County Fair, which took place August 4-8, had a variety of competitive entries from 4-Hers, and there were several nice displays promoting the 100th anniversary of 4-H in NC. The number of entries in the canning category was up, and the fruits and vegetables looked much better than they did last year, suggesting that competitiors may have had a better growing…
