I’m in Fletcher, N.C. this week helping out with the N.C. Mountain State Fair, one of the most beautiful fairs in the country because it’s nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. (I may be a bit biased on this point, as I grew up not far down the road in Hendersonville.) The fair kicks off this Friday, Sept. 5, and it would make a great family roadtrip, especially since heading west this weekend might be a good idea.
After we helped Asheville news station WLOS get the lay of the fair land, I had the pleasure of working at the baked goods entry department, where cake after pie after cookie pored in. While it wasn’t good for my dinner-ready stomach, I loved getting to see the results of the WNC creativity and cooking-savvy. It reminded me of all of the baked goods that fill the Commercial Education Building at the State Fair.
My two favorite were the cupcakes pictured above. The Cupcake Shoppe of Raleigh, one of my favorite stops on Glenwood Avenue, should take note! Take a close look at the sushi cupcakes and you’ll see that the ginger sitting near the chopsticks is really a melted Starburst candy and the fish eggs are sugar sprinkles. Genius! The corn on the cob cupcakes are equally impressive with their jelly bean kernels. Which reminds me, I’m craving some roasted Fair corn…

I am constantly looking for something different in fair food. This shows some good imagination and its cute… something for the kids.
