Not every new food item is destined for deep-frying; chocolate-covered Twinkies coming to State Fair

For her many regular customers, vendor Doris Drury is known by one of two names: “The Tea Lady” or “The Mini-donut Lady.”

But the 30-year State Fair veteran isn’t content to be defined by just two products. Like most Fair vendors she keeps her eyes open for new ideas, and this year she will debut chocolate-covered Twinkies at the N.C. State Fair.

Some would argue that Twinkies are a pretty-near perfect food anyway, but the chocolate and assorted dipping options add a new twist to an old favorite.

We recently caught up with Doris at the N.C. Mountain State Fair, and she showed us what we have to look forward to.

About Merrie Go Round

Merrie Go Round is the midway alter-ego of Andrea Ashby, who has officially spent 252 days during the past 24 years at the N.C. State Fair. That's perfect attendance in case you were wondering. In addition to promoting the Fair, looking for untold Fair stories and working on various special events, I also spend a great deal of time roaming the grounds taking photos for the Website and State Fair publications. I like to keep my eyes and ears posted for the unusual and different things that make the State Fair such a great celebration of North Carolina people, traditions and history. I look forward to sharing with you the things I come across on my journey.

  1. hmmm, sounds delicious, but this is HARDLY a new or innovative idea. In fact, Hostess itself made these, and called them Chocodiles.
