My experience interning with the N.C. State Fair Press Office

Our intern Mallory has been in and out during the Fair’s crazy hours due to something called class, but she’s managed to get a look inside the walls of the State Fair Press Office…and lived to tell about it.

I never thought 2008 would be the year I became a intern with the Agriculture Department working in the Press Office of the N.C. State Fair. It has truly been a treat…. well sometimes! With phones ringing off the hook, frantic producers begging for media passes and permits, and best of all the chaotic crowds and odd afternoon snacks, this job has honestly been a day-to-day experience. However, I never knew what I was in for when I walked up the stairs and through those large board room doors. Each day was a new and pleasant surprise because after all the sarcasm, laughter and potential scoop stories kept the atmosphere fun, friendly and full of adventure. Any press office that has this much fun I would hesitate to call a job but rather call it an enjoyable way to spend your day!

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.
