The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show returns to the State Fair this year with displays that will leave you buzzing from excitement. A 6-man team of professional lumberjacks will chop, saw and roll their way through this highly competitive performance.

This year, the show is bringing a new canine competitor to North Carolina: Gracie, the log rolling dog. Gracie is about a year old, and she’s the only silver Labrador log-rolling dog currently performing in lumberjack competitions. She’ll try to stay afloat as the logs do their best to spin her into the water.

The Lumberjack Show features events like springboard chopping, crosscut sawing, axe throwing and log rolling. You’ll see lumberjacks using specifically built saws to cut through wood in a matter of seconds. They’re also adept at wood carving, and they might take an opportunity to craft a gift for a younger member of the crowd.

In addition to the thrills, there’s an educational component to the demonstration. Lee LeCaptain, founder of the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack show, promotes proper forest conservation practices. “We have to take care of our forests and manage them properly,” he says. “Our organizations plant a minimum of three trees for every one used in the show.”

Lee and his lumberjacks will talk about the importance of forestry management as well as prevention of pest and disease transmission. The trees for the Lumberjack Show are even sourced locally; logs for the Fair will come from a farm in Hendersonville.

The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show has been performing for more than 30 years across the nation and has been seen on five continents. You’ll have the opportunity to experience them right here in North Carolina. Head up to the N.C. Forest Service area, located behind Heritage Circle, for a thrilling and unforgettable show.
