Krispy Kreme cake

While Krispy Kreme donuts usually come in a cardboard box, one entry in the decorated cakes competition delivered donuts inside of a cake. Robin Bilodeau of Chapel Hill, a pastry chef at the Carolina Inn, designed the unusual cake after winning a ribbon last year for a dragon-shaped cake. She said she was struck with inspiration while at work, when a coworker brought in a dozen of the tasty treats. The cake uses a Styrofoam base with a clear, plastic top to showcase actual donuts inside, and took about two days to complete. Speaking of Krispy Kreme donuts, they’re selling them at one of the church restaurants on Restaurant Row. . .

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.

  1. Love this cake! The baking goods are one of my most favorite things to see at the fair.
