Fun and Fruity: Drink A Bull makes Got to Be NC Festival debut with a wine product meant to put the fun back into winemaking

With bold graphics and fruity flavors, Drink A Bull is not your typical wine product. In fact, this Durham-based winery produces wine products that are not even grape-based. Andrew and Allison Zimmerman opened Drink A Bull in 2021. The winery offers four base flavors of wine – apple, peach, raspberry and blackberry.

Their Durham facility may be a new venture, but the wines offered by the Zimmermans have roots that go a lot deeper. The wine traces it’s heritage back to the Waldensian immigrants that settled in Valdese in the 1890s. Just like the Waldensians saw wine making as a family heritage to pass down, so did the Zimmerman family.

Andrew’s father Eddie Zimmerman was introduced to the winemaking tradition by his great uncle, who was Waldensian. He also started helping out at the Waldensian Heritage Winery in Valdese in 2000. In 2008, he started his own winery called Waldensian Style wines, using fruit-based recipes that date back to the 1930s. Andrew uses these same recipes, tweaked a little for improved flavor profiles to produce Drink A Bull products.

“These products are deeply connected to the Waldensian heritage,” said Andrew, “but they are offered in a fun way that we think will appeal to all wine drinkers.” The wine is sold in cans, which are lighter than glass bottles and allow the wine to be enjoyed at the pool, beach or other places glass bottles are not allowed. The canning is a patented process that uses no CO2 to produce the finished product, which means the product does not have a fizzy taste. The cans also allow for complete elimination of light and oxygen exposure. Drink A Bull is sold in a four pack of cans, which equals about two bottles of wine. Also available for sale is the wine slushie and freeze-and-squeeze bags.

“My dad first introduced the wine slushie at the North Carolina Wine Festival in Tanglewood in 2010,” said Andrew. “It was a hot blistering day and the slushie was a big hit. Since then, a lot of wineries have started having slushie machines, but he was the first to make it popular. We will offer Brenda’s Bellini, which is a green tea and sweet apple wine served as a slushie, at the Festival.”

The Zimmermans are excited to bring Drink A Bull to the Got to Be NC Festival. “We can’t wait to meet all the people coming to support North Carolina products and introduce them to our wines. We want Drink A Bull to become a recognizable Triangle-based business,” said Andrew.

“Our production facility is in Durham,” he added “currently our wines are available at festivals and events across the area, including Carolina Courage and North Carolina Football Club matches at Wake Med Soccer Park. Our goal is to expand our fan base and introduce a new audience to Waldensian-style wines.

“Wines are meant to be enjoyed. When a customer tastes our product it will taste like they are having a natural glass of the fruit itself.”

You can find Drink A Bull in the Food Lion Local Goodness Marketplace at the Got to Be NC Festival, May 17th through the 19th. Dozens of North Carolina food companies, breweries and wineries will be sampling and selling some of the most delightful flavors North Carolina has to offer. Hours are Friday, noon to 8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $3.
