What if I told you that if you bring at least four cans of food to the N.C. State Fair on Thursday, Oct. 22, you’ll get free admission to the Fair on that day? No, I’m not pulling your turkey leg. In fact, we have offered a similar deal each Fair for the past 14 years. It’s a day of giving that we call Food Lion Hunger Relief Day. All food collected during Hunger Relief Day will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which serves a 34-county area.
Surprisingly, some people have never heard of this event, even though it is one of the largest one-day food drives in the state. So, to spread the word, we are taking the show on the road to another fall tradition – high school football.
This Friday, Oct. 9, GreenThing and Bearded Lady, along with representatives from the Food Bank, will be on location at the Cary High/Athens Drive football game hosting the first-ever Friday Night Food Drive. Fans from both schools are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the game, and everyone who participates in the food drive will be entered into a drawing for a State Fair Family Prize Pack.
If you have extra cans of food in your cupboard, consider supporting Cary High or Athens Drive this Friday. Otherwise, I expect to see you and your cans Thursday, Oct. 22, for Food Lion Hunger Relief Day.
