Farm Family of the Day: Overman Farms

The N.C. State Fair is a place where thrill-seekers and foodies can enjoy exciting rides and tasty treats; however, it is also a time to celebrate local agriculture and the hardworking folks who make it our state’s leading industry.

Farm Family of the Day, sponsored by Tractor Supply Co., is a program that recognizes one standout farm family each day of the N.C. State Fair. To honor these families’ accomplishments and contributions to North Carolina agriculture, they are awarded tickets to attend the fair on a day of their choosing, where they will be recognized through PA announcements and signs on the fairgrounds.

Today, the N.C. State Fair and Tractor Supply Co. congratulate Goldsboro’s Overman Farms, currently owned and operated by Ryan and Betsy Roberson. This seven-generation farm, with an agricultural heritage dating back to the Revolutionary War, is a diversified operation that produces sweet potatoes, corn and hay. Overman Farms also raises hogs and horses.

“Ryan and Betsy’s deep-rooted family tradition is matched by their commitment and dedication to the land,” said Catherine Watts, who nominated Overman Farms for Farm Family of the Day. “Their extensive knowledge and hands-on involvement in every aspect of their farming operation shows the true spirit of resilience and commitment to agriculture. They are a shining example of what it means to be a farm family in North Carolina.”

Overman Farms has made a significant impact on their local community not only through their unbreakable family values and strong work ethic but also through their active engagement in grassroots efforts.

Ryan’s in-laws, who are deeply involved in the N.C. Farm Bureau, have instilled in the Robersons the importance of community leadership. By participating in community efforts, they help strengthen not only their own operation but also the broader agricultural community.

“Their commitment to advocacy and leadership reflects their tenacity to the future of agriculture in North Carolina,” said Catherine. “Ryan and Betsy understand that positive change takes action, and they’re willing to extend themselves, their time and their resources to see that through. Recently, they’ve been involved in supporting hurricane relief.”

The Robersons love the N.C. State Fair because it celebrates the heart of what they do through its agricultural roots. Of course, their three young children think it’s the best place to be in October for its fun, flashy attractions, but visiting the fair as farmers “hits different” for Ryan and Betsy because they’re surrounded by the legacy they’ve helped create.

“I’m confident the Robersons take great pride in seeing some of the fruits of their labor on display for everyone to learn more about where their food comes from,” said Catherine. “From blue ribbon watermelons to Howling Cow ice cream, the N.C. State Fair is always a joyful visit for Ryan, Betsy and the kids.”

Congratulations to Overman Farms! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Farm Family of the Day feature.
