The N.C. State Fair is a place where thrill-seekers and foodies can enjoy exciting rides and tasty treats; however, it is also a time to celebrate local agriculture and the hardworking folks who make it our state’s leading industry.
Farm Family of the Day, sponsored by Tractor Supply Co., is a program that recognizes one standout farm family each day of the N.C. State Fair. To honor these families’ accomplishments and contributions to North Carolina agriculture, they are awarded tickets to attend the fair on a day of their choosing, where they will be recognized through PA announcements and signs on the fairgrounds.
Today, the N.C. State Fair and Tractor Supply Co. congratulate Flavor Full Farms – a fourth-generation apple farm in Edneyville, where they harvest and package more than 100 acres of delicious, mouth-watering apples.
The farm is owned and operated by Jeff Nix, with the next generation eager to join the crew. He and his two grandsons, Hayden, 10, and Boone, 5, live and breathe every aspect of the farm. They join Jeff on the tractors when mowing the orchards and are the ultimate taste testers.
“Jeff, my dad, gives his all every single day in order to give back to the community, other farmers and the children of North Carolina,” said daughter and nominator Chelsea Nix. “He thrives on knowing his apple slices provide schools with a nutritious snack, as well as a smile, knowing it was grown locally.”
When it comes to giving back to the community, Flavor Full Farms does not fall short. Not only do they donate to various food banks multiple times each season, but Jeff takes pride in caring for fellow farmers by making it a point to always put them first.
“If there were no farms, there would be no food,” said Chelsea. “But who takes care of the farmers? The answer is simple: Jeff does.”
The Nix family looks forward to the N.C. State Fair every year.
“The memories that are created annually at the fair are those that no family member could ever forget,” said Chelsea. “The environment the fair provides becomes a nostalgia that you miss during the rest of the year. Whether it’s the lights from the carnival rides, the smells of delicious food, or the laughs throughout the fairgrounds, it’s indescribable.”
