Last year, Firecracker issued a press office challenge for our staff to try something new at the Fair. We rose to the challenge and each of us did something we’d never done before at the Fair like visit the wildlife tent, tie tobacco, watch a pig race, sing a song and race down a giant slide. This year, we want your help.
Do you have a favorite exhibit or competition we’ve never mentioned on the blog? Is there new food you’d like us to review before you come to the Fair? Do you want to make sure a certain ride is worth the ticket price? If so, send us your press office challenges by commenting below, posting on our Facebook wall or tweeting on Twitter.
We’ll pick three fan-selected challenges on Friday, Oct. 15, and cover them during the Fair. If your challenge is selected, you’ll receive a family prize pack, including four free Fair tickets and other Fair swag. Bring on the challenges!
How about helping the blacksmith guy out. While you’re over that way you could grab some apple cider. They even have frozen cider for the warm days.

Visit all the stations at the Green N.C. Tent and get a prize! This is always on our to-do list. Also, my absolute FAVORITE thing to eat at the State Fair is strawberry shortcake, from the booth with the giant strawberry on it. You can’t miss it! This year my friends and I are trying to do everything on the list of 100 things to do at the State Fair that you posted on July 6th! Well…except for the few things that are date sensitive, like collecting cans on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day, because we will only be there on the 16th. Thanks for sharing that list, I love this blog!
I’ve never been to the state fair but looking around at the different things going on there I would have to say you should take a drive in the demolition derby 🙂
I think you should try the new ride they have this year. Not sure whats it’s called, but it supossed to between a swing and a carosal. I think that would be fun. I always like trying the new rides they have out there. So go give it a try. I hope you know the one i’m talking about.
How about attending the State Fair just like a Girl Scout would to earn the Home Grown in NC patch? http://www.nccoastalpines.org/BPWC/Documents/PG916%20Home%20Grown%20in%20North%20Carolina%20Patch%20Program.pdf
Milk a Cow at the State Fair Ark Animals
See who can get the most food for under either $5.00 or $10.00. I love bargain hunting at the fair!
Sort thru one barrel of trash- then, estimate the amount of recyclables/compostables that are landfilled during the fair.
Off the beaten path… Take home a pine tree seedling from the forestry service. Shoot targets (& learn abt gun safety) at the Dept of wildlife. Don’t forget to picnic at the men’s flower exhibit then tour the garden patches.
State Fair Scavenger Hunt (and make trying at least one of the new funky deep fried things one of the MUST DO’s), then win some swag!
Take the pull up challenge (men) or the “hang on the bar” challenge (women) at the Marines booth. From the high bar, you’ll have a great view of fairgoers eating their fries while they watch you sweat! (You’ll also have a great appreciation for the marines watching you who don’t laugh.)
I think the press office staff should take pictures of themselves participating in the “Michelle’s Magical Poodles” act at the Kiddieland Fun Park. Hold the circus rings while the poodles jump through and get a pic!
This is cool! Ok, two challenges I’m submitting:
1. Walk around for 30 mins with Rock-It the Robot and mock everything he does, from singing to dancing and interacting with the public. (I’d really like to see a fair person get in that suit and control it like Rock-It does for 30 mins, but not sure if he would allow it. If he does, then I’ll make that the first challenge instead!)
2. Take a ride around the entire horse track, one time, on a Paso Fino horse. Would love to know what the gait feels like when riding and if you bounce a lot or a little. I’ve read that riding a Paso is a “smooth” ride compared to other horse breeds.
