Volunteers help enhance State Fair experiences

“What did you pick for me today,” asked Princeton High School FFA member and Field of Dreams volunteer Collin Worley to a group of kids walking up with their baskets. “Let’s see what you have.” When visitors to the Field of Dreams walk through the exhibit and pick vegetables along the path, they take those items to the market stand where they can learn more about the vegetables. Graham Building offers several ways to learn about ag

Many people head to the Graham Building to see the cows, but that’s not the only attraction in the building. If you look to the side of the show rings, you’ll notice the Moovie Theater, a 15-foot LED screen highlighting farms and farming practices from across the state. Nina McManus of Durham makes costumes because it makes her happy. This year her hobby resulted in a first-place win in the garment sewn by adult competition at the N.C. State Fair. This is McManus’ third year entering the fair. “The first year I didn’t win,” she said. ‘last year I won a blue ribbon in the knitting competition. The State Fair Bacon Trail is going on a Goosechase

The Bacon Trail was a big hit at the N.C. State Fair last year, with fairgoers checking out more than 40 vendors with bacon on the menu. The Fair’s tastiest trail is becoming more exciting this year with the chance to compete in scavenger hunt-style missions to gain points for the daily chance to win a month’s worth of bacon from one of several North Carolina pork companies. Points are earned through purchasing food with bacon or interacting with pig-related exhibits throughout the fair.
