Two green thumbs up

Many find the recent rain that has flooded the Triangle to be annoying, but Mike Lowe isn’t bothered. The rain hasn’t affected his prize-winning garden. The longtime gardener has been winning North Carolina State Fair ribbons for his plants for the past six years. Lowe’s love for the garden began as a child when his grandmother gave him a small potted cactus to take care of. Since then, his expertise of plant life has grown and now includes perennials, annuals and foliage shrubs. Though he’s always been a gardener, Lowe’s decision to exhibit his plants at the fair happened only…

A new Deep Fried face

The past two weeks since I went from being just a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to an intern with the State Fair have felt less like days and more like minutes. North Carolina’s Homecoming

We introduced the 2013 Fair theme last Friday afternoon. The State Fair office staff and grounds crew performed a crazed edition of the Harlem Shake. We figured this video was the perfect way to be somewhat relevant and also to portray the craziness that is the N.C. State Fair. The great thing about the fair is that it draws people of all walks of life and from all over North Carolina. For 11 days, we’re one big melting pot for the state. Or as our theme puts it, we’re North Carolina’s homecoming. We love the imagery of the theme. Anyone…

Raising ticket prices

Today we asked the N.C. Board of Agriculture for permission to raise prices for admission tickets, and they approved our request to move forward with the rule change. If approved, admission ticket prices will increase by $1 for both adult and children’s tickets in time for the 2013 N.C. State Fair. This does not affect ride ticket prices. We don’t like raising ticket prices, and we’ve avoided doing so for some time. Ticket prices have been mostly stagnant, even as inflation has caused other fairs to raise ticket prices. We are proud to be one of the most affordable fairs…
