Casey’s guide to new foods

Casey bursting through Oval 1

There’s a new bird in town – Fair mascot Casey the Cardinal. And he’s got lots of tips for fairgoers.  This week is all about food – as Casey dishes on a few new foods he can’t wait to try.

If you are like Casey, you’ve probably already got a list of foods – and it probably includes old favorites such Howling Cow ice cream, Al’s French fries or a warm Cary United Methodist ham biscuit. Leave a little room for something new.

Deep Fried Pimento Cheese
Pimento cheese must be one of the “it” foods for 2015 because we have two food vendors deep frying it up at this year’s fair. Check out the deep-fried, cheesy goodness at Ragin Cajun and Woody’s Wing Wagon.

“High on the Hog” Sandwich
Granny’s Country Kitchen’s new creation includes a pork chop topped with barbecue, bacon, slaw and sauce. This sandwich just might be (pardon the pun) “Hog Heaven.”

Deep Fried Pop Tarts and Smore’s
Fair vendors do not sit around in their off time just trying to think of new foods to deep fry… Well, maybe they do! Either way, this year, enjoy deep-fried pop tarts or deep-fried smores at the Deep Fried Candy Bar booth. As a bird that loves a good campfire and ghost story, Casey can’t wait to try a deep fried smore’s.

Carolina Crab Bites
Nothing Could be Finer than fresh North Carolina lump crab meat. N&T Concessions will be offering crab bites deep fried with a crabby sauce.

Chickpea Fries
Our friends at Neomonde are offering something different -seasoned chickpea fries with a house-made harissa dipping sauce. Neomonde also offers a salad at their booth – and it’s not deep fried.

Check out more new foods online or on the free State Fair app available on Google Play store and iTunes.

About Funhouse

On the blog I go by Fun House (AKA Heather Overton). At the Fair you'll find me checking out the blue ribbon winners or hanging out in Heritage Circle. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite part of the Fair, but I can tell you one thing I hate - leaving it on the last day. I can't wait for opening day!
