Today we hosted members of the media for a sneak peek of the N.C. State Fair at our annual media lunch. For the first time, this included the Best New Food at the Fair competition. Members of the media were invited to sample 10 new foods and vote on their favorite. The theme this year among the new foods is seafood. And one of those dishes, Carolina Crab Dip by Captain Neill’s Seafood of Columbia, was chosen as the winner.
Captain Neill’s has been a vendor at the fair since 2004. The family operates a seafood processing plant in Columbia that employs about 155. “We source most of our seafood out of North Carolina,” said Tara Foreman. “Our crab, shrimp and catfish are from off our coast. All of our seafood comes from domestic sources, nothing foreign.”
The N.C. State Fair is the only place you’ll find Captain Neill’s right now. Although Foreman is planning to open a restaurant, WayPoint Oyster Bar, soon. The restaurant will be located in Columbia.

Carolina Crab Dip will be available at the Fair for $10 for a healthy-sized portion. And now that you’re hungry – be sure to try their calamari, clams, shrimp, oysters, soft crab, scallops, homemade crab cakes and catfish.
Captain Neill’s is located near the front of the Graham Building.
While Captain Neill’s won the inaugural Best New Food at the Fair, the voting was pretty close. Every one of the new items had its fans. Check out the gallery below for more delicious, new offerings at this year’s fair.
