Our State Public House
Cheers to this! Archetype Brewing has won Best in Show in the N.C. State Fair Beer Competition with their Belgian Strong Ale. The brewery bested 32 other gold medal-winning beers to secure the N.C. Brewers Cup trophy.
With North Carolina being the home to more than 260 breweries and brewpubs, the 2018 NC Brewers Cup featured the stiffest competition yet in the event’s seven-year history, with 76 North Carolina breweries competing for medals over two days of judging. Twenty certified beer judges from across the Southeast traveled to the competition to select the finest examples of each beer style from the 624 entries submitted by professional brewers across the state. The most popular categories included IPA (81 entries), fruit beer (46 entries), spice beer (46 entries) and pale American ale (45 entries).
The other Best in Show winners are:
- Silver: Wilmington Brewing Company – “Weekend Vibes,” a New England style double IPA
- Bronze: Triple C Brewing – “Grill Friend,” an amber ale brewed with cherrywood smoked malt
- Honorable Mention: Brown Truck Brewery – “#47 Fainting Goat Spirits Saison,” a saison brewed with Emulsion Gin by Fainting Goats Spirits.

Medalists will be on display in the Education Building at the NC State Fair. Visitors to the N.C. State Fair will also be able to purchase flights of N.C. craft beer and wine to sample. The beverages will be available in the Our State Public House in Heritage Circle. Sponsored by Our State magazine, the Public House will showcase dozens of breweries, wineries, and cideries from across the state. Daily offerings will include several different styles of craft beer, wine, and cider, including award-winning examples of each.
Patrons of the Our State Public House will be able to choose from two servings of wine, cider or beer. Wine servings are 3 ounces each, and each beer or cider sample will be 8 ounces. Tickets cost $10 each and will be sold from noon to 10 p.m. There is a limit of one ticket per person. IDs will be checked at the door, and no one under 21 will be admitted.
This popular attraction is a partnership with the N.C. Craft Brewers Guild and the N.C. Wine and Grape Council. The Guild will use a portion of the proceeds for research and marketing benefiting North Carolina’s craft beer industry. North Carolina is home to 280 craft breweries and 185 wineries.
