The N.C. State Fair draws in thousands of visitors, many of them being children. If these kids are anything like I was, then visiting the State Fair is one of the highlights of their year. Many schools take day trips to the fair and for other kids they visit with family.
As fun as the State Fair is, it can also be educational! Across the fairgrounds there are several interesting educational exhibits and activities for kids. While it would be hard to break down every single educational opportunity at the fair, below we have included a list of some good place to start if you’re looking for way to work some learning into your child or students’ day of fun.
N.C. State Fair Scavenger Hunt
Where would be if we didn’t recommend our very own educational scavenger hunt to those looking for educational opportunities at the fair? On the N.C. State Fair website, ncstatefair.org, you can find PDF copies of scavenger hunts designed for all your grade school students. These scavenger hunts will take your kids to every corner of the fairgrounds learning about the different departments and exhibits that are featured at the fair. This is a great way to make sure your child gets a good overview of the many educational offerings around the fair while also working in some fun.

Smokey Bear & the N.C. Forest Service

While we’re sure you’re planning a trip to visit the giant Smokey Bear (and if you’re not you totally should!) we wanted make sure you knew that there are other educational opportunities in the area. Smokey Bear himself is a great place to learn about fire safety and in the surrounding area the N.C. Forest Service will have several booths talking about the things that they do and how to take care of North Carolina forests. Stop by here to learn some interesting facts and to grab some of the giveaways handed out each year.
Children’s Barnyard
Got an animal lover with you? Make sure to swing by the Children’s Barnyard across from the Village of Yesteryear to pay a visit to the many animals housed inside. Your child will have the chance to look at several different farm animals, both big and small, while learning more about the ways that they play a role in N.C. agriculture. This exhibit is run by students from local high school FFA groups.

Germ City

Germ City is an annual hit with kids visiting the State Fair, and it’s no surprise. This exhibit, located between the Agri Supply Building and the Jim Graham Building, teaches kids about the dangers of germs while also offering a fun educational experience. While at Germ City your child will learn proper handwashing techniques and facts about germs and sickness.
Little tip: This is one of the stops on the State Fair scavenger hunt! Make sure to check it out!
Field of Dreams
The Field of Dreams is the perfect spot for all future farmers and plant enthusiasts. Kids will have the chance to walk through fields of specialty gardens learning the history behind the foods they see on their plates at dinner. Kids will have the chance to harvest their own crops and visit the market to sell their crops. They’ll also get the chance to earn a goodie bag of North Carolina products. This exhibit also hosts a coloring contest, mini tractor rides, and animals!
