Day 6: Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples

Over the past four years, we’ve had the chance to sample some of the latest, greatest and strangest fair food to come to the N.C. State Fair. In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought we would look back at 15 of our favorite food-related posts from the past four years. Each day between now and Christmas, we’ll post a different food review from our archives. 6. Sampling Miss Debbie’s specialty apples

Miss Debbie from Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples was nice enough to let us sample some of her newest creations, the Pig Candy Apple, the Honkin’ Hog Apple and the Caramel Pecan Pie. You can taste these apples for yourself in the Commercial Building near Gate 11. Here’s the details on the apples we sample in the video below: Pig Candy Apple: Granny Smith Apple covered in caramel and dipped in white chocolate and covered in bacon and topped off with brown sugar and cinnamon. Honkin’ Hog Apple: Same as the Pig Candy Apple, but with dark cholocate instead of white….

Making memories of a lifetime one year at a time

Firecracker and I are celebrating our 20th State Fair. Yes, Firecracker started working when she was 5 years old! (hahaha…very funny.) So in honor of our 20th anniversaries, we thought it would be fun to come up with our Top 20 Fair Memories to share with readers. When I was thinking back over all the cool and fun things I have gotten to do at the State Fair, the one thing that stood out in almost every one of them is the fun I had with the people involved. And that is really what the State Fair is all about,…

North Carolinians love Krispy Kreme

North Carolinians pay homage to the Krispy Kreme doughnut in a variety of ways. The winner of the N.C. Egg Art contest is a Krispy Kreme burger with all the fixings. North Carolina’s Egg Farmers sponsor the N.C. Egg Art contest, which has to have a State Fair theme. The winning artist is Jacqueline Breckling from Cary. You can find the egg art in the Hobbies and Handicraft Building.   This Lego Krispy Kreme store depiction earned a second-place ribbon for Howard Maye of Raleigh in the North Carolina travel theme category. It can be found in the Hobbies and…

It’s all about the food

The annual Media Preview Lunch is on Monday, which means we will announce the new deep fried foods from folks in the Grandstand concession stand (aka Deep Fried Heaven). To hold you over until then, here’s a look at a few things we’ve already announced via Facebook and Instagram: 1. Eastern-style pulled-pork BBQ with homemade coleslaw deep fried in an egg roll wrap and served with a tangy BBQ sauce. Check out Woody’s down the hill to the Midway entrance nearest Dorton Arena. 2. Brinkley’s is doing a sour candy apple…Crushed warheads on a Granny Smith apple. Find Brinkley’s across…

The ScrumdiddlYUMtious

Willy Wonka would be proud. Granny Smith apple, dipped in caramel, rolled in toffee candy bits, dipped again in white chocolate, rolled in crushed Butterfinger candy, dipped AGAIN in rich, dark chocolate, rolled in semi-sweet chips, dipped again in chocolate, rolled in an array of nuts, topped with more chocolate and a specialty candy. This comes from Miss Debbies’ Specialty Apples in the Commercial Building, just inside the atrium. Her booth is a candy apple lover’s dream, with more flavors than you can dream. We are big fans of Miss Debbie’s apples. This year, we’ve sampled the Reese’s After Dark…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: Cold, rainy, happy

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. Going to the fair today could have been a really bad idea. It was cold and drizzly. Small Fry was grouchy from cutting her latest tooth. And I wasn’t feeling very motivated this morning. But the fair makes everything better. We arrived at around 9:30 a.m., along with every other person in North Carolina who owns a stroller. Clearly we’d all received the same top secret, for-parents-of-young-children memo. Go to…

Deep Fried Ambassador update: How ’bout them apples?

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog. How do I begin to describe Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples? Colossal. Decadent. Scrumptious. With names like “The Ultimate Apple Super Extreme” and “Cashew Turtle Super Monster,” these apples are incredible. My husband, a candy-apple connoisseur, says that Miss Debbie’s apples are the best he’s ever tasted. We shared a pecan pie apple this week (fresh Granny Smith coated in homemade caramel, dipped in a homemade pecan praline confection and rolled…
