4 cans = Full day of fun

Where else can you eat fried _____ on a stick, be suspended upside down while hurtling through the air and milk a cow–all for a good cause? This Thursday at the Fair, you can do all of that and more if you bring four cans of food to Food Lion Hunger Relief Day. Four cans will get you free admission into the Fair all day long while helping the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central and Eastern N.C., which serves 32 counties across the state.

With the sagging economy and higher fuel and food costs, the food bank has been struggling to keep up with demand, making this fund-raiser for the organization especially important to stock the shelves before the holidays. Ag Commissioner Steve Troxler is also encouraging all State Fair employees, workers and members of the media to bring canned foods to the Fair on this day, so I’ll see you at the grocery store tonight to pick up my cans before work tomorrow.

About Cotton Candy

Karlie Justus - blogged for the 2008 / 2009 N.C. State Fairs. This is her bio from 2009: When I'm not blogging for the N.C. State Fair, I go by Karlie Justus--but Cotton Candy suits me just fine. My earliest memories of the Fair are of the times my parents would bring my brother and I up from Asheville, N.C. for a double dose of the Fair and a N.C. State football game. Fast-forward two decades later, and I'm a public information officer for the deep fried celebration whose must-see Fair attractions include the giant pumpkins, decorated cakes and deep fried Oreos.
